One of the biggest surprises for families moving to Fort Benning is that commute times aren’t always what they expect.
A neighborhood that looks farther away on a map may actually feel easier to live in than one that’s technically closer. Gate traffic, school drop-offs, bridge crossings, and where you’ll be working on post can all play a role.
The good news? Compared to many military communities, most commutes around Fort Benning are relatively manageable.
The challenge is figuring out which area makes the most sense for your family’s lifestyle.
The Real Question Isn’t “How Long Is The Commute?”
It’s:
“How much commuting am I willing to do in exchange for the lifestyle I want?”
Some families want to be as close to post as possible.
Others would gladly drive an extra 10 or 15 minutes for a larger yard, a newer home, different schools, or a quieter neighborhood.
There’s no right answer. It comes down to what matters most to your family.
On-Post Housing
Typical commute: 0–10 minutes
The biggest advantage of living on post is convenience.
You’re close to work, schools, CDCs, commissary, and most day-to-day military services.
For families with demanding schedules, frequent TDYs, or very early report times, eliminating a daily commute can be a major quality-of-life improvement.
The tradeoff is that you’ll typically have fewer housing choices and less control over lot size, floor plans, and neighborhood selection.
Columbus
Typical commute: 10–25 minutes
Columbus is often the sweet spot for military families who want convenience without living on post.
You’ll find a wide variety of neighborhoods, established communities, shopping, restaurants, parks, and activities for kids.
One thing many newcomers don’t realize is that Columbus itself can feel very different depending on where you are. Midtown, North Columbus, and South Columbus each have their own personality and housing styles.
For families who want easy access to both Fort Benning and everyday amenities, Columbus remains one of the most popular choices.
Midland
Typical commute: 20–35 minutes
Midland has become one of the most sought-after areas for military families relocating to Fort Benning.
Many buyers are drawn to newer construction, larger lots, and neighborhoods that feel more suburban than urban.
What surprises many newcomers is how much Midland can vary from one neighborhood to the next. Some areas are close to shopping and schools, while others feel almost rural despite sharing the same mailing address.
For many families, the slightly longer commute is worth it for the additional space and neighborhood atmosphere.
North Columbus & Fortson
Typical commute: 25–35 minutes
North Columbus and Fortson appeal to buyers looking for larger homes, established neighborhoods, and properties with more land.
This area is particularly popular among military families who plan to stay longer or who want a home that will continue to fit their needs after their military assignment ends.
The farther north you go, the more likely you are to find acreage, custom homes, and a quieter pace of life.
The tradeoff is additional commute time, but many families feel the extra space more than makes up for it.
Phenix City
Typical commute: 15–30 minutes
Phenix City is often one of the first Alabama locations military families consider.
Many buyers appreciate the lower property taxes, newer construction opportunities, and proximity to Columbus.
Depending on where you’re located and which gate you’ll be using, some areas of Phenix City can actually provide a shorter commute than parts of North Columbus or Midland.
Phenix City also tends to offer a wide range of housing options, from established neighborhoods to new construction communities.
Fort Mitchell
Typical commute: 20–35 minutes
Fort Mitchell has become increasingly popular among military families looking for more house and more yard without venturing too far from post.
Many neighborhoods offer a straightforward drive to Fort Benning, particularly for those utilizing the back gate.
Fort Mitchell generally feels quieter and less developed than Columbus or Phenix City, which appeals to families looking for a slower pace of life.
If your priority is maximizing space while maintaining a reasonable commute, Fort Mitchell is worth considering.
Smiths Station
Typical commute: 25–40 minutes
Smiths Station is one of the area’s hidden gems.
Many military families initially overlook it because it sits farther from Fort Benning than Phenix City, but it has become increasingly popular for buyers seeking newer homes, larger lots, and a more suburban environment.
One advantage that often gets overlooked is the consistency of the commute. While the drive may be longer, many residents experience less stop-and-go city traffic compared to some routes through Columbus.
Smiths Station also offers a good balance between affordability and home size, making it attractive for buyers who want to maximize their budget.
Like Midland, the area can vary significantly depending on the neighborhood. Some locations near Highway 280 provide easier access to Columbus, while others feel much more rural.
Harris County
Typical commute: 30–45 minutes
For buyers who dream about acreage, privacy, and a rural lifestyle, Harris County is often at the top of the list.
You’ll find everything from established neighborhoods to larger tracts of land with room for workshops, barns, and outdoor hobbies.
Many military families choose Harris County because they’re thinking beyond their current assignment and purchasing a home they could see themselves owning long term.
The commute is the longest on this list, but for the right buyer, the lifestyle benefits often outweigh the additional drive time.
A Quick Word About Gate Traffic
This is where things get tricky.
Two families living in the same neighborhood can have very different commuting experiences depending on:
- Which gate they use
- What time they report
- Which part of post they work on
- School drop-off schedules
- Construction or road closures
That’s why I always recommend thinking about your daily routine as a whole rather than focusing exclusively on mileage.
What I Tell My Clients
The families who end up happiest around Fort Benning usually aren’t the ones who picked the shortest commute.
They’re the ones who picked the neighborhood that fit their lifestyle.
Sometimes that means living five minutes from work.
Sometimes it means driving a little farther in exchange for a larger yard, a newer home, a specific school district, or simply a neighborhood that feels like home.
If you’re relocating to Fort Benning and trying to decide between Columbus, Midland, Fortson, Harris County, Phenix City, Fort Mitchell, or Smiths Station, I’d be happy to help you compare the pros and cons of each area based on your family’s priorities.
