I swear schools are where almost every PCS family hits information overload.
You start with one Google search, then somehow you’re reading Facebook comments, comparing school ratings, trying to understand the difference between Muscogee County and Harris County, and wondering if living in Alabama changes everything.
By the end of it, you probably have more questions than answers.
If that’s you, you’re in good company.
I’ve helped a lot of families relocate to the Fort Benning area, and one thing I’ve learned is this:
Most people aren’t actually looking for the “best” school. They’re looking for the best place for their family to live.
Schools are part of that conversation—but they’re only one piece of the puzzle.
So instead of trying to rank schools or tell you where you should live, I want to explain how schools around Fort Benning actually work. Once you understand the basics, the whole process feels a lot less overwhelming.
The First Thing to Know
If you’re planning to live off post, your child’s public school is generally determined by your residential address.
That means the community you choose will typically determine which public school district serves your family.
Here’s a simple breakdown.

If you’re living on post, students typically attend DoDEA schools through 8th grade before transitioning to a local high school.
Here’s Why I Tell Families Not to Start With Schools
This might sound a little backwards, but hear me out.
When families first reach out to me, it’s really common to ask:
“What’s the best school district?”
The problem is… that’s usually the wrong first question.
Instead, I like to start with things like:
- How long of a commute feels realistic every day?
- Do you want to live in Georgia or Alabama?
- Are sidewalks important, or would you rather have a little more land?
- Do you want to be close to shopping and restaurants?
- Is this likely a three-year assignment or somewhere you hope to stay longer?
Once we answer those questions, we’ve usually narrowed the search to just a few communities.
Then it’s much easier to research the schools serving those specific areas instead of trying to compare dozens of schools across two states.
That approach tends to feel a whole lot less overwhelming.
From there, I’d organize the rest of the post by community, not district.
Thinking About Columbus or Midland?
If Columbus or Midland are on your list, your children will generally attend schools within Muscogee County School District.
One thing that makes Muscogee County unique is its magnet program system. High school students can apply to specialized academic programs such as International Baccalaureate, engineering, biotechnology, liberal arts, and career-focused pathways.

Considering Harris County?
If Fortson, Hamilton, Cataula, Ellerslie, Pine Mountain, or Waverly Hall are on your radar, students generally attend Harris County Schools.
A lot of military families I work with like Harris County because it offers a different pace while still being within commuting distance of Fort Benning. Whether it’s the right fit for your family depends on what you’re looking for.

Looking at Alabama?
One thing I always encourage PCS families to do is look on both sides of the river.
Some families end up loving Columbus.
Others realize Phenix City, Fort Mitchell, or Smiths Station fit their lifestyle better.
There isn’t a right or wrong answer—just the one that works best for your family.

Considering Private School?
The Columbus area has several established private school options, including:
- Brookstone School
- St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School
- Calvary Christian School
- St. Luke School
- Wynnbrook Christian School (serving Kindergarten through 8th grade, with additional preschool and homeschool opportunities)
One thing that’s changed over the last couple of years is that both Georgia and Alabama now offer programs that may help eligible families with private school tuition.
Georgia Promise Scholarship
Georgia’s Promise Scholarship is an Education Savings Account (ESA) program that may allow eligible students to use state funds toward private school tuition and other approved educational expenses. Active-duty military families have special residency provisions under the program. The scholarship can provide up to $6,500 per eligible student for the 2026–2027 school year.

Families living in Alabama may also qualify for assistance through the CHOOSE Act, Alabama’s Education Savings Account program for eligible K–12 students attending participating private schools.

And don’t forget to visit each district’s website for attendance zones, registration information, school calendars, athletics, and specialty programs.
My Two Cents
If you take one thing away from this post, let it be this:
You do not have to have every school figured out before you decide where to live.
In fact, I think trying to do that is what makes so many PCS families feel stuck.
Start by figuring out where your family would enjoy living.
Then research the schools serving those communities.
It’s a lot easier to compare four or five schools than every school around Fort Benning.
And if you’re still not sure where to start, that’s okay too. Honestly, helping families sort through those options is one of my favorite parts of this job.
